I really like Notion, but it has some shortcomings that frighten me at times. Maybe good to keep an open mind concerning alternatives. Hence this article.


History & context

Trello was the first of its kind. It had to do the heavy lifting, especially of figuring out how to provide users with a good user experience. It suffered a lot from dialectics of progression, and many other parties could copy their original work. To make things worse: They had quite an innovators' dilemma: Update functionality at the risk of alienating existing customers.

DIY?

How about building your own online database app? Seems like an impossibly complicated job. But maybe it's actually fun to do.

Apps - Long list

Airtable

  • Similar to Notion is Airtable an online RDBMS, rather than just a project management tool
  • Airtable is only free for a limited time. After 14 days (?) you have to start paying
  • In 2023.03, I had a look at Airtable, and I was really impressed. It's much more versatile than Notion, including so-called workflows and Interfaces (whatever the exact name was). Maybe if I had known Airtable earlier, I would have choosen it?

Ik kom het wel eens tegen wanneer ik iets rondom Notion aan het opzoeken ben. (voorbeeld), en dat ziet er veelbelovend uit. Het lijkt echter niet self-hosted of 100% gratis te zijn, dus dat maakt het niet bijster interessant.

Ik krijg vaak advertenties voor dit product te zien. Eigendom van Atlassian. Verder weet ik er niets van. Ik vind de naam geweldig.

Jira is de tool voor software-development van Atlassian, het moederbedrijf van Trello [7]. Adrian has experience with it, and finds it usefull.

  • Ik zie regelmatig advertenties voor Monday
  • Paul en Jaap gebruiken het. Paul vond het erg prettig dat bepaalde interacties per email kunnen, zonder dat je hoeft in te loggen in het systeem. Bv. als iets (bv. een taak) per email binnenkomt, dat je het kunt doorsturen naar het systeem.

Trello is de meest voor-de-hand-liggende alternatief. Nadeel: Geen overzicht (al heb ik de indruk dat het steeds meer interessante nieuwe functionaliteiten biedt).

Obsidian

Ik kwam een paar YouTube-video's tegen waarin Notion wordt vergeleken met Obsidian. Interessant!

  • Het ging haar initiëel om note-taking. Dat klinkt een beetje als waar ik MediaWiki voor gebruik. Daarna is ze andere toepassingen gaan gebruiken, wo. databases, sync-blocks en sjablonen.

Problemen die ze ervoer:

  • Ze was teveel tijd kwijt met het configureren van haar systeem, ipv. het te gebruiken
  • Notion is niet keyboard-shortcut-friendly. Misschien wat ik ervoer bij sommige MySQL Workbench-alternatieven: Als standaard shortcuts niet ondersteund worden, vind ik het het heel snel heel vervelend worden
  • Te veel afleiding. Misschien bedoelt ze, dat er teveel knoppen en symbolen op een pagina staan - Dat ervaar ik als afleidend.

Voordelen van Obsidian voor haar:

  • Ziet er gelijk al goed uit
  • More extensible
  • Simpler?
