Hetzner is a hosting company and may be an interesting alternative to TransIP.

  • Located within the EU (Germany) - important because of GDPR
  • At first sight, I had the impression that they don't offer VPSs, but that might be incorporated in their Cloud offerings.
  • They're from Gunzenhauzen! I've once spend a night there! Not very relevant - I know :)
  • According to a review, their site is in German, Enlglish and Russian. Seems they removed Russian - Nice

Comparison

Comparison between a TransIP VPS that I actually use, and two comparable Hetzner configurations:

Component TransIP C16 Hetzner EX101 Hetzner AX161
CPU AMD Epyc Intel Core i9-3900 AMD Epyc
Processing units 16 16 32
Internal memory 32 GB 64 GB DDR5 ECC 384 GB DDR4 ECC
Storage (NVMe SSD) 800 GB 2x1.92 TB (Raid 1 - mirroring) 2x1.92 TB
Notes Currently (2023.08) in use
  • Comparable in performance to TransIP
  • EX is Hetzner's budget line
  • Comparable in price to TransIP - Selected by J.
  • AX is Hetzner's permium performance line
Price/month ex. VAT € 276 € 90 € 275

On 2023.08.22, this TransIP server has been upgraded (50% more memory: € 143,84). Let's compare prices again:

Component TransIP C16 +
extra memory
Hetzner EX101 -
Similar performance as TransIP
Hetzner AX161 -
Similar performance as TransIP with best CPU as basis
Hetzner AX161 -
Similar price as TransIP with best CPU as basis
CPU AMD Epyc Intel Core i9-3900 AMD Epyc 7502P "Rome", Zen2 AMD Epyc 7502P "Rome", Zen2
Processing units 16 16 32 32
Internal memory 48 GB 64 GB DDR5 ECC 128 GB 768 GB DDR4 ECC
Storage (NVMe SSD) 800 GB 2x1.92 TB (Raid 1 - mirroring) 2x960 GB (RAID-1) 2x1.92 TB (RAID-1)
Price/month ex. VAT € 420 € 90 € 152 € 418
Notes
  • Comparable in performance to TransIP - Actually quite a bit better: Dedicated instead of VPS; more memory; more storage
  • EX is Hetzner's budget line
  • This is the base configuration of a server with the best Epyc CPU Hetzner offers. Except for this CPU, all other settings are the minimum settings
  • This server costs less than 1/3rd of the TransIP server, but it already has about 3-4 times the capacity/power of the TransIP server

The only reasonable way to match the price of TransIP, is by increasing internal memory

Note that the offers from Hetzner concern dedicated servers, not VPSs.

Some other potential advantages:

  • They often 'elastic performance': Sometimes I had really CPU intensive tasks for which I would like to rent CPU power, but not from Amazon. TransIP doesn't offer such a thing, but Hetzner does
  • Testing environments: At TransIP, minimal contract duration is 1 month. I suspect that at Hetzner, this goes by the hour
  • Better scalability: At TransIP, we're using the penultimate configuration. Not so at Hetzer.
